The Growth Model Perspective and Emerging Markets
During the last decades, emerging markets were the main source of growth for the global economy. Andreas Nölke explores the ability of the growth model perspective to make sense of capitalism outside of the established OECD economies.

He argues that this perspective is well suited to the task, given that it captures important emerging market features – such as their stronger molding through the global political economy, their politically more contested nature, and their higher degree of economic volatility – better than a traditional varieties of capitalism perspective. At the same time, the growth model perspective has to be amended, for example with regard to the existence of additional types, the identification of social blocs in non-democratic political systems, and the existence of different regional models within very large economies, such as China.

Andreas Nölke is Professor of Political Science, in particular International Relations and International Political Economy, at Goethe University Frankfurt and head of a research group at the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE. He is currently leading a project on the comparison of emerging market capitalisms, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
