Birgit Apitzsch Joins Executive Board of Society of Friends and Former Associates

The Society of Friends and Former Associates of the MPIfG elected Birgit Apitzsch as a new board member at its November 2022 general meeting. Birgit Apitzsch has been Professor of Sociology/Labor, Economy and Welfare at Ruhr University Bochum since October 2021. Her connection with the MPIfG dates back to when she was studying for her doctorate between 2005 and 2009. more

A new book by former MPIfG research group leader Ariane Leendertz has recently been published by Hamburger Edition. In Der erschöpfte Staat: Eine andere Geschichte des Neoliberalismus, the author uses the image of the “exhausted state” to symbolize the erosion of belief in the state’s ability to solve social problems. more

Kathleen Griesbach Takes Up Post at University of Texas

Kathleen Griesbach is joining the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Sociology this August as assistant professor of sociology. The department is ranked in the top ten among public universities in the USA. As a postdoc in Jens Beckert’s Economic Sociology Project Area at the MPIfG, Griesbach worked from 2020 to 2022 on her project “Positional Uncertainty: Contingent Workers Seeking a Place in Unstable Times.” more
