In a new MPIfG Discussion Paper, Michael Schedelik and Andreas Nölke argue for integrating Comparative and International Political Economy by showing how peripheral growth models are shaped by — and shape — global economic shifts. They analyze the effects of global commodity cycles on exporters like Brazil and Indonesia, the impact of financial cycles on debt-led growth models like in South Africa and Turkey, and the role of global production chains and foreign investment for FDI-led growth models of manufacturing exporters like Vietnam or Thailand.

The consequences of global warming are becoming tangible – and often deadly – for growing segments of the global population. For instance, river floods and tropical cyclones have become more frequent and destructive due to climate change. The social consequences of global warming are more subtle, as worsening environmental conditions ripple through societies and strain the social fabric. This edition, edited by Leon Wansleben, intends to inspire economic sociologists to consider climate change as a major structural force impacting whole economies, markets, and economic actors.

The Game: The Economy of Undocumented Migration from Afghanistan to Europe offers an ethnographic account of Afghan refugees navigating the perilous journey from Afghanistan to Germany. MPIfG researcher Hannah Pool accompanies a group of Afghan families and friends as they move through Iran, Turkey, Greece, and the Balkan route in pursuit of asylum and safety. Based on her award-winning dissertation, the book explores the moral economy” of migration – the social norms, mutual obligations, and expectations that shape the actions of migrants.
