December 22, 2025

In mid-November of last year the German Economic Institute (IW) and the MPIfG held their 13th joint conference in Cologne. “The Future of the German Business/Growth Model” brought researchers from both institutes together to discuss how deglobalization and decarbonization are changing the German economic model. IW director Michael Hüther and MPIfG director Lucio Baccaro analyzed the challenges from an economic and sociological perspective, with further insights provided by IW economist Samina Sultan and MPIfG political economist Pálma Polyák. The conference builds on a long tradition of cooperation between the two institutes, which have been researching the German business model and its transformation for over 25 years. Their collaboration brings together economic and sociological perspectives on key issues for the future of the German economy.
