New MPIfG Book: Behördenconsulting by Alina Marktanner
Alina Marktanner’s Behördenconsulting: Unternehmensberater in der öffentlichen Verwaltung der Bundesrepublik, 1970er- bis 2000er-Jahre (Berlin: De Gruyter Oldenbourg, 2023) is the latest title to be included in the MPIfG Books series. The author describes in her book how management consultants came to be a fixture of the German public sector and explores the interests that brought consultants and public servants together. Tracing the professionalization of the industry from the middle of the twentieth century, she shows how political and public administration leaders used consultants’ expertise to steer conflicts of interest with stakeholders and to sideline unions. Alina Marktanner was a doctoral student at the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) from 2015 to 2020 and joined the Department of Modern History and its Cultures of Knowledge and Technology at RWTH Aachen in November 2020.
