Otto Hahn Medal 2022 Awarded to Hannah Pool

MPIfG postdoctoral researcher Hannah Pool has been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society for her doctoral dissertation “‘Doing the Game’: The Moral Economy of Coming to Europe.” The 7,500-euro prize is awarded annually to up to thirty young researchers for outstanding achievement with the aim of motivating them to pursue a university or research career. In her dissertation, Pool examines the migration trajectories of people leaving Afghanistan and making their way to Western Europe via Iran, Turkey, Greece, and the Balkan route. Working with the concept of the moral economy and an ethnographic study across several locations, she explores the development of social relationships and economic transactions in undocumented migration. From 2017 to 2021, Pool was a doctoral student at the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) and has been a postdoc at the MPIfG since 2021.
