Carola Westermeier has been appointed as Professor of Economic Sociology at Marburg University. In April 2025, she became leader of the Lise Meitner Research Group “Technology and Sovereignty” at the MPIfG, whose work lies at the intersection of economic sociology, international political economy, and critical security studies. The group, which includes one postdoc and two doctoral researchers, is currently in its closing phase. Carola Westermeier will remain an associated researcher at the Institute until 2028 and will also continue to be an affiliated faculty member of the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE). During her time at the MPIfG, Westermeier investigated how new financial technologies support state efforts toward sovereignty and thereby transform economic and social relations at both the national and international levels. She previously held positions at TU Darmstadt, the University of Giessen, and Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. The Max Planck Society’s Lise Meitner Excellence Program supports exceptionally qualified female researchers and aims to offer them long-term career prospects at a Max Planck institute.
