Jens Beckert to Spend 2026/27 at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study

May 06, 2026

MPIfG director Jens Beckert will join the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton for a year beginning in September. He is one of 21 scholars selected for the 2026/27 academic year from a pool of more than 600 applicants. Founded in 1930 – with Albert Einstein among its first professors – the IAS is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious independent research centers. Each year, the School of Social Science invites outstanding scholars from the social sciences and related fields for research stays to develop their projects in an interdisciplinary environment. In Princeton, Beckert will work on his book project The Society Capital Creates, which examines the social and political consequences of the increasing concentration of wealth and power of capital. The project builds on his work with the MPIfG’s “Wealth and Social Inequality” research group and connects with the School’s annual theme, “Emerging Forces in Global Political Economy.”
