Journalist in Residence Fellowship

Visiting stays for experienced journalists focusing on politics, society, or the economy

+++ We regret that we have to suspend our Journalist in Residence Fellowship in the upcoming academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The application period for the academic year 2022/23 begins in early 2022. +++
The Journalist in Residence Fellowship offers journalists research stays lasting between six weeks and three months.
With the Fellowship, the MPIfG aims to strengthen the transfer of knowledge between the social sciences and society and encourage coverage of sociopolitical issues in the press. The fellowship is expressly intended to promote independent journalism. There is no expectation that the participating journalists will report on the Institute's research activities.

How to apply

  • February 1 – April 30: Application period for stays during the following academic year
  • May: Fellowship recipients are announced
  • October – June: Individually arranged stays occur within this timeframe

We look forward to receiving your online application. It should contain a letter of recommendation from the editors-in-chief, a CV, up to five relevant samples of your work, and a project proposal for your stay. Open positions are announced here.

Who can apply

Journalists, including freelancers, working in local or national media who have many years of work experience and regularly cover academic topics or topics in politics, society, or the economy may apply. You should have a strong desire to immerse yourself in in your chosen project in a dialog with the researchers.

Program structure

The MPIfG offers you the opportunity to participate in the daily routine of research in accordance with the Journalist in Residence model. Our offer includes:
  • Working on your own research project
  • The chance to participate in internal academic events
  • A researcher as a mentor
  • An office at the Institute and full use of the library and online literature sources for social scientists
Journalists in Residence gain insight into the academic work of a renowned research institute with researchers and visitors from around the country and the world and actively participate in the life of the Institute. Journalists in Residence should hold an internal colloquium on their topic or on the interface between journalism and research during their stay, be willing to engage with researchers at the Institute, and write a report about their experience after their stay.

Length of your stay

Six week to three months. The exact length of your stay will be agreed upon on an individual basis.

During your stay, the Max Planck Society will provide you with a fellowship of up to 3,500 euros per month to cover living expenses.

"This program can not only help reduce the tension in the interaction between the media and the academic world, but also open new perspectives. These two things are long overdue."
