Budget
The MPIfG is a research institute of the Max Planck Society (MPG), an independent, non-profit organization financed largely with public funds from the German federal and state governments. The MPG currently has 86 institutes and research facilities and 20 Max Planck Centers.
The MPIfG's annual budget was 6.2 million euros in 2022.
Personnel
The Institute has 39.5 full-time positions for researchers and service staff and is currently receiving funding for 23 positions for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. Another 16 doctoral researchers at the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) are funded by one of the two partner universities, the University of Cologne or the University of Duisburg-Essen. Other posts at the MPIfG receive third-party funding. One such post is in the research group funded through the DFG Leibniz Prize awarded to Jens Beckert (2021–2028).
The MPIfG currently has 2 directors, employs 2 research group leaders, 1 group leader, 10 senior researchers, and some 32 early career researchers. As of December 31, 2022, there were 58 researchers working at the Institute or at one of the two partner universities in Cologne or Duisburg-Essen as part of the IMPRS-SPCE. The MPIfG also hosts visiting researchers from Germany and abroad for up to a year; in 2022 it welcomed 22 guests from 10 countries.
Library
The MPIfG has its own library with a collection of some 60,000 titles in the social sciences, political science, economics, and history that focus on the Institute’s research program. It also provides access to around 450,000 centrally licensed ebooks and to online and print journals. Among the library's facilities are an electronic catalogue of the Institute's own collection and access to online searches of external bibliographic and journal or newspaper databases.
