Forty-eight researchers currently work at the Institute, including two directors, three research group leaders, ten senior researchers, ten postdoctoral researchers, and sixteen doctoral researchers. Additional doctoral researchers in the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) are funded by one of the two partner universities, Cologne or Duisburg-Essen. In addition, the MPIfG offers researchers from Germany and abroad guest stays of up to one year. The Institute welcomed twenty-two guests from ten countries in 2025.

The MPIfG has its own library with a collection of some 60,000 titles in the social sciences, political science, economics, and history that focus on the Institute’s research program. It also provides access to around 450,000 centrally licensed ebooks and to online and print journals. Among the library's facilities are an electronic catalogue of the Institute's own collection and access to online searches of external bibliographic and journal or newspaper databases.
