Democracy

Democracy as a theme is present in all the subject areas I have explored. Political democracy, however, did not emerge in my work until later, after a long period of studying industrial democracy and economic democracy—all the more so as the latter increasingly found themselves in crisis, which heightened the importance of democracy in the state. My perspective, which gradually developed during the transition from social liberalism to neoliberalism, centered on the changing relationship between democracy and capitalism in an era of globalization. This quickly gave rise to an additional theme: the influence of a state’s size on its capacity for democratization. I have examined these connections in greater detail in my book Zwischen Globalismus und Demokratie (2021) and its English revision, Taking Back Control? (2024).
