New MPIfG Book: Der erschöpfte Staat by Ariane Leendertz

October 31, 2022

A new book by former MPIfG research group leader Ariane Leendertz has recently been published by Hamburger Edition. In Der erschöpfte Staat: Eine andere Geschichte des Neoliberalismus, the author uses the image of the “exhausted state” to symbolize the erosion of belief in the state’s ability to solve social problems. Her broadly based study focusing on the USA traces this process in the social and political discourse on complexity and governance in the last quarter of the twentieth century. With Ronald Reagan’s election to president, the role of the state as problem-solver ended once and for all and the institutional revolution that followed ushered in the era of neoliberalism. Ariane Leendertz is a historian and research fellow with the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. She was a research group leader at the MPIfG between 2014 and 2019.
