The organization and dynamics of society – “Gesellschaftsforschung” 2/2019

The latest issue of the “Gesellschaftsforschung” research magazine, on the organization and dynamics of society, is dedicated to the Institute’s founding director, Renate Mayntz, and her life’s work. In the lead article, Edgar Grande pays tribute to the grande dame of sociology on her ninetieth birthday. In an interview with Ariane Leendertz and Uwe Schimank, Renate Mayntz talks about her time at the University of Cologne and with the Max Planck Society. The article is an extract from the volume “Ordnung und Fragilität des Sozialen”, which was published by Campus Verlag to mark the occasion. “The sleeping giant in the economy is the state,” says Leon Wansleben. Since January 2019, he and his new research group have been exploring the central role of public finances against a background of rising levels of indebtedness. In his profile of the research group leader, Martin Roos describes what it is that informs this view. In their opinion piece, Benjamin Braun and Marina Hübner argue that the Eurogroup, as a powerhouse in European economic governance, evades an important democratic principle. The “Gesellschaftsforschung” research magazine is published twice a year in German and is available to download or order free of charge as a printed edition or as a PDF newsletter by email.
