The changing role of the social sciences since the Post-War Era: a symposium for Renate Mayntz

A symposium entitled “Between Knowledge and Politics: The Social Sciences since the Post-War Era” was held at the MPIfG on May 2, 2019, to mark the ninetieth birthday of Renate Mayntz. Together with Renate Mayntz and following her work, long-standing academic colleagues reflected on the changes in the relationship between social scientific knowledge and political and social developments over the last six decades. Four introductory statements provided the thematic framework for the symposium: “When Does the Development of a Scientific Concept Demand Perspective Development and When Does It Demand a Change of Perspective?” (Uwe Schimank, Bremen); “Questions Regarding the Micro-Macro Problem of Social Scientific Explanations” (Fritz W. Scharpf, Cologne); “The Stubbornness of Politics” (Edgar Grande, Berlin); and “Does Social Power Have a Place in Actor-Centered Institutionalism?” (Claus Offe, Berlin). more
