The American Sociological Review accepted my article on the "female-closure penalty."
In this study, I argue that women suffer a “closure penalty” and face severe career disadvantages when collaborating in cohesive teams. But they can reduce their disadvantages in open networks with higher degrees of diversity and information flow. Building on Granovetter, Burt, and Podolny, I argue that weak ties, diversity, and brokerage work especially well for otherwise disadvantaged labor market groups.

In accepting the paper for publication, the ASR editors wrote that they feel that this study "is a creative and significant contribution to the development of understanding of gender differences, networks, and social capital." download paper (preprint version)
