Journalist in Residence Fellowship

A program for experienced journalists specializing in political, social, or economic issues

Apply by 30 April 2024 for guest stays in the academic year 2024/2025!

The Journalist in Residence Fellowship is an opportunity for journalists to spend between six weeks and three months at the Institute. The MPIfG's aim with the program is to strengthen the transfer of knowledge between the social sciences and society and encourage coverage of sociopolitical issues in the press and media. The Fellowship is expressly intended to promote independent journalism. There is no expectation that the participating journalists will report on the Institute's research activities.

How to Apply

  • Februar–April: Application period for a stay during the following academic year, check our Job openings

  • May: Fellowship recipients announced

  • October–June: Timeframe for individually arranged stay

Applications should include a letter of recommendation from your editor-in-chief, a CV, up to five relevant samples of your work, and a project proposal for your stay. You will find the announcement here as soon as it is possible to apply.

Who Can Apply

Journalists, including freelancers, working in local or national media who have many years of experience and regularly cover academic topics or political, social, or economic issues may apply. If you wish to apply for the Fellowship, you should have a strong desire to immerse yourself in your chosen project in dialogue with the researchers at the Institute.

Program Structure

Under the Journalist in Residence model, the MPIfG offers you an opportunity to be part of the Institute's daily life and work. This includes

  • working on your own research project
  • the chance to participate in internal academic events
  • a researcher as a mentor
  • office space at the Institute and full use of the library and online resources.

Journalists in Residence gain insight into the academic work of a renowned research institute with researchers and visitors from Germany and around the world and actively participate in Institute life. We ask Journalists in Residence to hold an internal colloquium on their topic or on the interface between journalism and research during their stay, be willing to engage with the researchers working at the Institute, and write a report about their experience after their stay.

Length of Stay

Between six weeks and three months. The exact length of your stay will be agreed upon on an individual basis.

Funding

Journalists in Residence receive a fellowship from the Max Planck Society during their stay.
