Social Science and the Practice of Politics

Wolfgang Streeck

This long-term project examines the relationship between theory and practice in the social sciences under contemporary political and economic conditions. It concentrates on the tension between the inherent practical dimension of any theory of society and the long distance that needs to be covered for theory to become effective in practice. The project also serves to reflect the experiences of social scientists in providing policy advice and to explore the possibilities and limits of social science in supporting political decision-making. Of particular historical interest is the development of sociology and political science in Germany during the construction of a democratic social order in the immediate postwar period. Project duration: January 2009 to October 2014.
