Data protection information for the MPIfG library portal elibrary


 
The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V. (MPG) takes the protection of your personal data very seriously. We process personal data gathered when visiting our websites in compliance with applicable data protection legislation. We neither publish your data nor transmit them to third parties on an unauthorized basis.
In the following section, we explain which data we record when you visit our MPIfG library portal elibrary, and exactly how they are utilized.

General information

We are collecting data about your use of elibrary with the goal of improving the site's structure and our library collection. Our service providers collect data to protect their infrastructure.

 
We don't want to "get to know you better" and we're not profit oriented. We do not supply data to 3rd parties aside from the service providers named on this page (unless required by law or court order). All data is handled in Germany, under the comparatively strict local law, regardless of your location.
 

 
Examples of insights we hope to gain by collecting data:

Logfiles

elibrary is being run for us by the Verbundzentrale des gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbundes. The VZG's web servers collect personally identifiable information in their log files when you access elibrary.
 
The following information is being temporarily stored:

Cookies

elibrary's log-in functionality is based on session cookies.
Most browsers are configured to automatically accept 1st party cookies. However, you can configure your browser to not accept these, and may then be unable to log in to elibrary.
 

Matomo (analytics.mpdl.mpg.de)

We have contracted the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) to generate insights into the behaviour of elibrary users for us. The MPDL is using the web analytics platform Matomo (formerly Piwik) to that end, which utilizes cookies and JavaScript to collect several types of information, which are then transferred and stored on a server run by the MPDL. You can use elibrary without being tracked in this way (see below).
 
The following types of data are being collected by the MPDL's Matomo server (unless you have opted out):

Additionally, if you allow JavaScript from analytics.mpdl.mpg.de to run:

Storage and analysis of your data is done solely on one server run by the MPDL in Germany.
Legal basis for collection of your personally identifiable information is § 6.1 f) GDPR. We assert a legitimate interest in collecting and using this data to improve the service we offer with elibrary.
 
Opting out:
You have the following two (mutually independent) avenues for opting out:

Storage and analysis are strictly performed in anonymized form (truncated IP addresses). Session cookies are deleted when your browser is closed. User specific profiles are not created.

VZG

The Verbundzentrale des Gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbundes (VZG) iis our web hoster, they are running/maintaining the web server offering elibrary. The VZG also provides the K10plus-Zentral SOLR-index, which you are querying via elibrary. In the sense of GDPR § 6.1 f), they have an legitimate interest to handle and analyze visitor data to secure their infrastructure and maintain the level of service covenanted to us.
