Capitalism and the Family: Issue 2/14 of the "Gesellschaftsforschung" Newsletter

The latest issue of the newsletter asks researchers at the MPIfG about capitalism's influence on the family. Wolfgang Streeck, in his article on children, work, and consumption, explains why births and birth rates are important topics in a research program on the political economy of modern capitalism. In their dissertations, Annina T. Aßmann, Barbara Fulda, and Sara Weckemann stress the close relationship between flexible labor markets, family structures, and birth-rate trends and argue that approaches focusing only on family sociology or demographics are insufficient. The newsletter profiles the researcher Kathleen Thelen, Professor for Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and External Scientific Member of the MPIfG, and there is a report on the festivities and colloquium that took place on the occasion of Wolfgang Streeck’s retirement. more
