Conference on Economic Disintegration with the University of Cologne

A conference entitled "Causes and Consequences of Economic Disintegration: Evidence from the Twentieth Century" was organized jointly by the MPIfG and the University of Cologne’s Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences on April 12 and 13, 2012. Some fifty participants from academia, business and government gathered to hear international scholars from a number of fields discuss the origins and impact of the disintegration of coherent economic regions and explore the question of whether strains were evident long before the coherence came to an end. One common thread among the talks was that many of the currency and trade zones that had been set up to last for a long time were inherently unstable, so that longer periods of crisis led to their disintegration.
