Order of Merit for Renate Mayntz and Wolfgang Streeck
On April 7, 2011, Renate Mayntz, founding director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, and Wolfgang Streeck, director at the institute, were awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia by Minister-President Hannelore Kraft. Acknowledging the scholars' outstanding contributions to the community, she called Renate Mayntz one of the most influential social scientists in Germany, whose "political consulting has had a lasting impact on political practice" Kraft recognized Wolfgang Streeck for his contribution to developing the MPIfG’s research profile, ensuring that it would stay in Cologne, and building the IMPRS-SPCE, the first doctoral program in Germany devoted to economic sociology and political economy. Along with the State Prize, the Order of Merit is the most distinguished award the state of North Rhine-Westphalia confers.
