Jan Sauermann was awarded his doctorate from the University of Cologne in November 2010. In his dissertation on social preferences in democratic decision-making, he showed how mutual trust, fairness, and reciprocity form social preferences that in turn affect majority decision-making, interact with political institutions, and ultimately influence governmental policy on redistribution. Sauermann is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the MPIfG.
