Positive Feedback Received for Journalist in Residence Program
Around thirty media representatives, academics and sponsors met on October 1, 2010, for a workshop titled "The Social Sciences in the Media" in order to take stock of five years of Journalist in Residence Fellowships. Since 2005, twenty-five journalists have had the opportunity to be in residence for one to three months at either the MPIfG or one of its three partner institutions. The funding for the fellowships for experienced reporters in the fields of politics and economics has been granted by the Volkswagen Foundation for five years. Allowing for time away from the day-to-day grind in the editorial department, for in-depth research and for discussions with scholars about current societal problems and questions was conducive to qualified reporting on social science topics and contributed to improved mutual understanding between social scientists and specialized journalists. The In-residence concept proved to be a successful platform for encouraging dialogue between the social sciences and the media and it will continue to do so.
